Opportunity for Remediation

sodium borates / opportunity for remediation

In the region around Valjevo, there are numerous inactive open pits and quarries which require rehabilitation through backfilling, reforestation, and other forms of reclamation, presenting an opportunity for innovative and sustainable action.

This opportunity, which we aim to confirm through further research, involves backfilling these inactive areas using by-products from our sodium borate processing facility. Unlike conventional mineral processing methods, our technology avoids the use of toxic reagents and ensures that the by-products do not contain harmful elements, thereby minimizing the risk of negative environmental impacts.

By repurposing industrial by-products into material for restoring degraded ecosystems (pits and quarries), we seek to demonstrate our company's vision of sustainable business practices and economic development. At the same time, filling degraded areas would halt the on-going release of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, while reforestation would further rehabilitate the entire degraded area and ecosystems.

This approach would illustrate how industries can positively contribute to the local environment, representing an innovative synergy of industrial progress and environmental management. It would prove that economic development does not have to come at the expense of environmental preservation and societal well-being.

Furthermore, this initiative could directly contribute to Serbia’s ecological goals, aligned with its commitment to EU candidacy, to restore 20% of its degraded ecosystems by 2030.
