History of Geothermal in Serbia

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY / HISTORY OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN SERBIA

Serbia has a long history of utilizing geothermal energy, dating back to Roman times when hot springs were used for bathing and heating. In modern history, the country has increasingly recognized the potential of its geothermal resources. Serbia possesses abundant geothermal reservoirs suitable for direct use. Currently, geothermal energy in Serbia is employed for district heating, agriculture, and spa tourism (therapeutic use of mineral waters). Although geothermal energy production is not yet widely implemented, there is growing interest in exploring its potential to diversify Serbia's energy mix and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a country striving for a sustainable energy future, Serbia's geothermal resources could play a key role in its environmental and economic strategies.
