Potential for the City of Valjevo

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY / POTENTIAL FOR VALJEVO

Valjevo, situated within the resource-rich Valjevo-Mionica Basin, possesses significant untapped geothermal energy potential. Recent analyses have identified five priority zones with favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions, indicating the presence of renewable thermal and subthermal underground water resources. These geothermal reserves offer an opportunity to transition Valjevo’s energy systems towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, particularly for residential heating and industrial applications.

Among the identified zones, the area near the current Valjevo heating plant and the wastewater treatment facility stands out as an ideal candidate for immediate geothermal development. Leveraging these resources, Valjevo could significantly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels such as fuel oil, which has contributed to severe air pollution. Harnessing geothermal energy would not only cut greenhouse gas emissions but also lower the levels of other harmful air pollutants, thereby significantly improving air quality and public health.

The potential benefits for Valjevo extend beyond environmental improvements. Transitioning to geothermal energy could enhance the city’s energy security, reduce heating costs for residents, and mitigate sensitivity to fluctuating fossil fuel prices. This shift could also stimulate local economic development, create green jobs, and position Valjevo as a leader in renewable energy adoption in Serbia. With strategic investments and infrastructure development, geothermal energy could transform the city of Valjevo into a sustainable and energy-modern city, setting a powerful example for others to follow.
